Parkinson lost the battle

parkinsons-disease1Dr. Dennis Turner suffered from severe Parkinson’s Disease. He experienced frequent shocks initially leading to paralysis of right side. In this disease he almost had his brain cells damaged. These were a special type of cells known as Dopamine Neurons and they got progressively degenerated. He was treated by Dr Levesque with stem cells obtained from his brain. He treated the left part of the brain initially as the right part of his body was badly damaged. Results came gradually with firstly lessening of the shocks which almost faded away after few weeks. He was cured.

Dr. Turner said in his report that he went for a safari in 2001 and swam in Atlantic with the white sharks. He also took pictures. He is really enjoying his new life. He says thank you Stem Cells.

Cerebral Palsy could not survive the punch

kthorpeeastnews0710_468x726Gabor Bocskai, 19 year, Hungarian suffered from cerebral palsy. He was paralysed and could not even posture his body up. He almost lost his vision, and his co-ordination. He got treated in Tiantan Puhua Neurosurgical Hospital, China in 2006. The stem cells were introduced into the patient’s spinal cord fluid (via Lumbar Puncture) and by the spinal fluid circulation goes directly into the brain.

Presently he has got his vision improved and regained his co-ordination. His voice has regained its clarity and he can even put up his body without any support. He needed only crutches to support while walking. Doesn’t this sounds good and remarkable?

Multiple Sclerosis got its nose broken

Richard Burt of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago and his colleagues had previously tried using stem cells to reverse this process in patients with advanced stages of the disease, with little success.

“If you wait until there’s neuro-degeneration, you’re trying to close the barn door after the horse has already escaped,” says Burt. What you really want to do is stop the autoimmune attack before it causes nerve-cell damage, he adds.

ghIn the latest trial, his team recruited 12 women and 11 men in the early relapsing-remitting stage of MS, who had not responded to treatment with the drug, interferon beta, after six months. They removed stem cells from the patients’ bone marrow, and then used chemicals to destroy all existing immune cells in the body, before re-injecting the stem cells. These then developed into naive immune cells that do not see myelin as alien, and hence do not attack it.

Three years later, 17 of the patients had improved by at least one point on a standard disability scale, while none of the patients had deteriorated.

Rheumatoid arthritis got its leg broken

rheumatoid_arthritisSister Nancy Boushey approached Stem cell treatment. Twenty two years ago, Sister Nancy Boushey’s health suddenly started terminating. One day she woke up with extreme pain through out her body. And after many tests her closest diagnoses was Rheumatoid Arthritis.

She had years of pain and difficulty in mobility until she came to know told about Stem Cell therapy. She had reservations regarding the source of placenta. Today, she recommends the procedure to millions with a smile as she realized that stem cells are from medically approved and safe adult placenta.

The amniotic Membrane Stem Cell Implant is a unique concept to rebuild tissues and cells of degenerating organs. She needed double knee replacement before stem cell implant. But now she is on low dosages of orthodox medication.

Her health is so improved that she has been able to become one of the three pioneering Sisters for a new monastery near Rio Grande city, Texas. She is no longer in pain and very capable of living full healthy life. The normal deformities from Rheumatoid Arthritis are virtually non existent. After twenty two years of threat now she knows that Placental Stem Cell therapy rescue her from the valley of darkness.

Diabetes Type 2 perished after the shock

images10-14 December, 2005, San Francisko, California. A study carried out in Argentina by a team of researchers from a Not-For-Profit Organization called ‘Don Roberto Fernandez Vina Foundation’ (San Nicolas- Buenos Aires, Argentina) demonstrated that stem cells implanted into type 2 diabetes patients, in direct form into the pancreas, improve the production of Endogenous Insulin, increase the levels of “C Peptide”, decrease blood glucose levels and glycated hemoglobin levels faster than other treatments.

The study was carried out on 16 type 2 diabetes patients - it is part of the denominated “Argentinean Protocol to achieve the improvement of diabetes patients with the implants “in situ” of autologous, named “Te-Cel-Di-Ar” (Terapia Celular Diabetes Argentina) 84% of the patients that had received the autologuous bone marrow cells could also abandon the drugs that stimulate insulin production or the insulin that they had been receiving previously.

There were no complications at all, demonstrating the safety of the technique, since the extraction, the cellular implants and evolution of the patients.

Spinal Cord Injury had to admit defeat

080106193147-largeEight patients with SCI (four acute and four chronic) to whom Researchers from DaVinci Biosciences, Costa Mesa, California, in collaboration with Hospital Luis Vernaza in Ecuador, administered BMCs directly into the spinal column, spinal canal and intravenously for each patient and followed for two years using MRI imaging to assess morphological changes in the spinal cord.

In eight patients who received BMC transplants through various routes and followed for two years, the scientists reported several functional improvements, perhaps the most important of which was improved bladder control.

Finally, the researchers noted that one of their cases suffered a gunshot wound and that their study marked the first time a gunshot wound victim had received BMC transplants through multiple routes.

“It is important to note,” concluded Dr. Silva,” that all of our patients with acute injuries improved significantly with no signs of deterioration or impediment of presumed spontaneous recovery.”

According to Dr. Svitlana Garbuzova-Davis, a spinal cord researcher at the University of South Florida, the study highlights the value of using several different simultaneous routes for the administration of stem cells, as well as the benefit of the cells themselves.

“While it would be interesting to know the respective contribution of each route of administration, this study does appear to support the need to move to carry out double blind clinical trials of BMCs in SCI, especially if a non-invasive route could be used.”

Cardiac attack failed to succumb

heart_attackIn 2003, the world’s first stem cell transplant was performed on a teenage boy who suffered a massive heart attack after accidentally shooting himself in the heart with a nail gun. The stem cells were harvested from his circulating blood, and then injected into the coronary artery that supplies blood to his heart. The operation was successfully performed on February 21st, at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, with Dr. Steven Timmis heading the surgery. The procedure was based upon research conducted by Dr. Piero Anversa of the New York Medical College in Valhalla, and by Dr. Donald Orlic of NIH.

“This treatment was Dimitri’s only option, aside from a heart transplant,” says William O’Neill, the chief of cardiology at Beaumont Hospital. “This is the first time that stem cells from a patient’s own blood have been used to repair heart damage. The goal is to use stem cells to regenerate damaged heart tissue and stimulate the growth of new blood vessels.”

Cancer pulls out of poisonous bite

Recently an young girl of Kolkata, India got cured from neuroblastoma a type of cancer after stem cell transplant. She had been detected at a very initial stage and was adviced to undergo a stem cell transplantation, October, 2008. Stem cell was extracted from her bone marrow of her pelvic bones. It was kept for a month in incubation and was operated on April, 2009.

Recently she was declared to be fit without any side effects. What a smile of glory and relief would surface on her parents’ face? Doen’t that inspire you?

Sickle cell anemia also perished

sickle-cellPamela Newton’s sickle cell disease was suffering from excruciating pain. She spent more time in the hospital than in her Capitol Heights apartment. She was on 15 pain pills a day, all heavy narcotics. She was bleeding regularly and needed daily transfusions of platelets.

She underwent a bone marrow transplant obtained from a sibling. After the transplant the doctors were doubtful about the immunogenic attacks that may develop post operations. So they used mild chemotherapy just to strengthen the immune system. Also three days after the doctors charged with a high dose of cyclophosphamide in order to kill the donor’s lymphocytes

Doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital said that “Newton is one of the first adults in the world to be cured of sickle cell disease - and the first using an experimental bone marrow transplant that could cure thousands like her who have been told they will never get better”.

A personal battle

Last but not the least Stem cell therapy won a personal battle too this year’s March. There was a controversy relating to the obtaining of embryo cells to manipulate as stem cells. It gave rise to ethical issues and the religious thinkers even condemned the practise as inhuman. But with the advent of Obama in President’s chair of US this year, he declared that his government will fund for the embryonic stem cell research.

The above stories proved that stem cell is a brave fighter among the atrocities. It has beaten up some of the notorious enemies whom even some of the most reputed drugs failed to tackle. Thus it has increased our hopes for the future. And we will remain awake to see our HERO to create more milestones. Just Stay Awake !
