A new way to inhibit prostrate cancel cells have been discovered by Norman Maitland, professor of molecular biology at the Yorkshire Cancer Research Unit (YCR) at the University of York, and his colleague Dr Anne Collins, which could prevent recurrence of the disease.

The scientists were able to identify and extract (and propagate in laboratory) the tumour stem cells that make up one in 1,000 of cancer cells.

Prof. Maitland said “It’s the most exciting thing I have seen in 10 years, but we don’t want to give people false hope, because the therapies for treating tumour stem cells have still to be developed.”

“We can now investigate specific therapies for killing the roots, rather than the leaves, of prostate cancers.”
