Japanese Progress in Converting Skin Cells To Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Using Retrovirus

In November Japanese researchers showed that adult human and mouse skin cells could be reprogrammed into stem cells similar to embryonic stem cells, which can be transformed into any type of cell. These cells, called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS), has the potential to be a major step forward in using stem cells to cure a variety of diseases. A major concern with using such stem cells (iPS) to treat disease has been the possibility that the retrovirus used to implant the cells might cause cancer, but now a group of Japanese scientists solved that problem.

Dr. James Watson is Himself Part Black & Asian…

Dr. James D WatsonWhy is it so interesting? Dr. James Watson is a famous American molecular biologist and a Nobel Laureate, best known as one of the co-discoverers of the structure of DNA. He recently provoked a furious public outcry by claiming black Africans were less intelligent than whites. It is very likely he had an African great grand-parent.

Dr Watson was forced to resign his post as head of a research laboratory in New York shortly after questioning the comparative intelligence of Africans. In an interview during his recent British book tour, Dr. Watson said he was “inherently gloomy about the prospects for Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours – whereas all the testing says not really”.

Breakthrough: Embryonic Stem Cells Grown From Monkey Skin Cells

In a major breakthrough Oregon researcher’s reported that they had created the world’s first fully formed, cloned monkey embryos and harvested batches of stem cells from them. The monkey embryos were each created from a single skin cell of a monkey. It also effectively settles a long-standing scientific debate about whether primates, which includes monkeys and humans, are biologically capable of being cloned; yes primates are capable of being cloned.

Stem Cell Therapy: A New Hope For Huntington’s Disease

In a new research, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, scientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center have shown how stem-cell therapy might someday be used to treat Huntington’s disease — a fatal disorder for which there is currently no cure or even a treatment to slow the disease.
