The Shanghai Umbilical Cord Blood Bank has completed its pilot period, successfully transfusing six leukemia patients and awaits a license from the Ministry of health.

The Ministry of Health has licensed umbilical cord banks in Beijing and Tianjin. It plans one bank for each of the 10 main provinces and municipalities. The other eight regions, including Shanghai, are in pilot stages of development.

An umbilical cord blood bank can apply for official license appraisal after it has collected 1,000 samples and performed five successful transfusions. Further examination is required before it receives its license.
