Stem cell transplant helped leukemia patient to live a normal life
Stem cell therapy has again captured the the headlines by helping a leukemia patient to live a problem free independent life.
Ron Hillyard, is a 31 year old resident of Galeton, Potter County. He was first diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in December 2005. Immediately he was suggested to take medication by his doctor. But due to some reason it failed.
Left with few options, Hillyard’s doctor, Geisinger hematologist oncologist Sharif Khan, recommended him to try for allogeneic bone marrow transplant or stem cell transplant to replenish stem cells destroyed by leukemia with the healthy stem cells of donor associated with intense rounds of chemotherapy.
During the first three months his body rejected the stem cells as foreign particles but then after taking suggestive immune suppressant medication his body began to accept the healthy stem cells.
And now he is on the way to recovery. Now he is leading his normal life as before. And for that he thanks to stem cell therapy.
