Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will lay the foundation stone for the stem cell research centre at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, on 1 December, 2005. The purpose of starting a stem cell research centre is to join the global search for solutions in genetics and diseases.

Speaking to mediapersons, here, yesterday, George Chandy, CMC director, said the centre would be set up in collaboration with the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology. The centre would focus on the use of bone marrow and cord blood derived from adult stem cells for treatment of various conditions.

Researchers would attempt to genetically modify these cells for possible use in treating people with genetic disorders. ‘Stem cell applications to regenerate damaged cardiac muscle and treatment of diabetes mellitus will be the important objectives of the stem cell research,’ he said.
