Stemcell study in curing heart disease will be officially started in Thailand according to a report in the Bangkok Post.

Some forty patients will be tested over two months - with 20 receiving stem cells transplanted into their hearts and the rest given normal medical treatment - to determine the effectiveness of the treatment.

‘There are many reports of stem cell studies worldwide,” Medical Sciences Department deputy chief Pongpan Vongmanee was quoted as saying.

He said the study will be conducted jointly by his department, Mahidol University and the Cardiac Institute of Thailand, with the results expected after at least one year.

“If the test runs well, we will speed up research into stem cell technology,” Pongpan said.

The department is building a 60-million-baht stem cell research laboratory, the report added.
