Stem Cell Scientists Bag Top US Medical Prize
Two Canadian scientists, Dr. Ernest McCulloch and Dr. James Till who first identified stem cells have won America’s most prestigious medical award - Lasker prize for basic medical research. They are expected to pick up their $50,000 prizes on Friday in New York.
Their research set the stage for today’s stem-cell research.
In the early 1970’s, McCulloch and Till’s research had proven that a single type of bone-marrow stem cell could create red cells, white cells and platelets. Their work paved the way for leukemia patients to be treated with bone-marrow transplants.
