When you are denying the hopes of millions of American families with loved ones suffering from diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, cancer and spinal cord injuries, there is really is no good way to explain it.
Everything Green said about the promise and excitement of stem cell research revolutionizing medicine and curing diseases was absolutely true. Everything he said about his support for such research was absolutely false.
Not only did Green vote against the bill Bush vetoed that would have expanded stem cell research, but Green voted seven times previously to ban and even to criminalize stem cell research.
It’s interesting that politicians now have to resort to publicly lying about something they claim is a moral issue.
Right now, there are more than 400,000 unused frozen embryos stored in fertility clinics. The number is growing. If those frozen embryos are not used for medical research or a tiny number for some fringe project such as Nightlight’s, the embryos will be destroyed, yes killed. If embroys are human life (as pro-lifers inanely believe) then these lives are being destroyed. Why not the stem cell opponents adopt each of these 400, 000 embryo’s they are so eager to send to dumpster?
That’s the really Big Lie that Bush and Green are trying to perpetuate when they claim that they oppose stem cell research because they are pro-life. The bill vetoed by Bush and opposed by Green specifically limited federally funded stem cell research to frozen embryos that were anyway slated for destruction.

It isn’t a problem of being stupid as people refer to GWB, it is an issue that we must educate better.
Arguments that throw claims that GWB prefers dumping babies in the trash over helping is not valid, let’s educate people so they understand.

first - i believe “adult” stem cells are the key to cures. they already match your cells so no rejection would take place. embryonic stem cells have cured no disease while adult stem cells are already doing that. second - although there are embryonic stem cells frozen, etc - once the door was open to using them, more esc would have to be produced, why perpetuate the killing of embryos who may one day be able to make a huge change in the world. please concentrate on adult stem cell research!!!!!!!

I’m amazed by the zeal to blame GWB and the religious right for withholding healing to millions of people. It’s as if there really aren’t any ethical issues beyond a few religious whackos and that the cures are simply a few months or years away.
More than the oversimplifying, the fervor over embryonic stem cells over adult stem cells confounds me. Over 67 diseases being treated today from adult stem cells is simply outstanding! As a person who cares deeply for helping the sick, I’m dumbfounded by the hate tossed at those who want some appreciation for the ethical implications of the embryonic approach.
There are some really promising opportunities on the horizon that allow everyone to benefit…. (example:
