Pakistan Ventures In Stem Cell Research
In an attempt to facilitate the stem cell research in their country, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences has decided to set up stem cell and bone marrow research centers there. All these centers will be built in the premises.
The stem cell experts and the Govt. officials hope that the stem cell research centers will be helpful for patients of various diseases like burns, cardiac. The laboratory will be the center for proposed stem cell, liver and bone marrow transplantation.
PIMS Executive Director Dr Abdul Majeed Rajput told Dr Lawrence Faulkner, a world known paediatric haematologist/oncologist, during a meeting, said,
“Being the country’s premier medical institute, PIMS should have bone marrow and stem cell transplantation centers. We have all the provisions for the facility but need a state-of-the-art centralized blood bank and a laboratory.”
Rajput also added that the lab will also be used for the proposed medical college university at PIMS.
He expressed hope for a better stem cell research and bone marrow transplantation facility after the establishment of the burns center with infection-free environment. Prof Anwarul Haque, Prof Mumtaz, Prof Khalid Hassan, Dr Lubna Naseem and Dr Sadaf also attended the meeting.
