Mother of a cerebral palsy kid plans for an umbilical cord stem cell transplant
In order to give her 2-year-old son the chance of a better life, a Dunedin mother is planning to fly him all the way to United States and Mexico for an umbilical cord stem cell transplant.
Caleb, now age 2 years developed cerebral palsy after suffering a massive brain bleed just days after birth. During his first year of life he had seven brain operations to relieve pressure on his brain due to a build-up of fluid. This results him a disease named cerebral palsy. This painful disease, has made him to suffer 50 seizures a day in addition to his inability to walk and talk.
And so with a hope to cure all these sufferings and to give him a better life, Shirley Turner, wants to take her son all the way to U.S and Mexico to get umbilical stem cell transplant.
She says, the success of umbilical cord blood cells transplant worth $15,000 is still unknown, but what is known is that it would do not harm.
Moreover she says “Because I have heard of children who have had it done in the US and now are leading a better and quality life, I’m really hoping that it will be a success in my son also. I just want to stop his seizures. Anything after that would be a bonus”.
She has estimated the trip would cost the family $35,000-$40,000, and they planned to spend the next six weeks before they leave fundraising.

Shirley
What made you decide to fly to Mexico for treatment over other centres. If you wish to view our web site for our granddaugther, we’ve chosen Germany for ease of travel etc. Would appreicate your thoughts/comments
