Brighton couple Jack A. Erdle, founder of Eldre Corp. in Henrietta, and his wife, Norma, has given the largest private donation ($1 million) ever specifically for stem cell research at the University of Rochester Medical Center. They didn’t specify what kind of stem cell research for which the money should be used.

Universities around the country have been using private funds to finance embryonic stem cell research after a federal ban on funding embryonic lines created after 2001. Last month, President Bush re-enforced his opinion on the matter by vetoing a bill that would have reinstated embryonic stem cell funding.

Peter Robinson, the University of Rochester Medical Center’s chief operating officer, said it had not been decided what the Erdles’ gift will be used for, but it will likely include some research involving embryonic stem cell lines.
