State Rep. John Gard, R-Peshtigo, speaker of the state Assembly, and Democrat Steve Kagen, an Appleton doctor, split sharply over reproductive issues Monday during an 8th Congressional District debate.

With only three weeks before the Nov. 7 election, the two candidates focused on their differences at a debate at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center.

The candidates discussed health care, the economy, American Indian gaming, national security and the environment, but particularly divisive was the discussion about abortion and stem cell research.

Kagen is pro-choice and pro-stem cell research whereas Gard opposes abortion and any form of embryonic stem cell research; Kagen supports abortion rights and stem cell research.
