The center in Pisa is being promoted by the College of Medicine at the University of Pisa and will oversee the creation of a department for the clinical use of stem cells and one for research in biotechnology.

It is backed by the regional government of Tuscany which is providing an initial five million euros.
The project has entered into operative phase with bids being accepted to create office and research space.

The center for regenerative medicine will be one of the biggest in Italy with ten laboratories set up to manipulate stem cells.

Teaching and research activities, both basic and clinical, will be carried for both the university and the hospital and the center will be open to agencies and companies involved in stem cell research.
