India’s 17th Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cell Banking Centre Launched at Pune
LifeCell, the pioneers in stem cell banking & research in India, announced the launch of its marketing and collection centre in Pune, for umbilical cord blood stem cell banking. Pune will be the 17th centre in India for LifeCell and the company plans to expand its network of marketing and collection centers to 31 cities, by March 2007.
Launched in November 2004, LifeCell is India’s first family cord blood bank to bring the revolutionary medical breakthrough of umbilical cord stem cell banking to the country. LifeCell has a technology tie-up with CRYO-CELL International (CCI) USA, (www.cryo-cell.com), which is the pioneer in the field of cord blood banking and the world’s biggest cord blood bank.
LifeCell offers its services for a fixed and transparent price. The cost includes Enrolment fee of Rs. 5000, Processing fee: Rs. 27,000 and Annual storage fee: Rs. 3,500 for 21 years.

This strikes me as a wasted investment. Cord stem cell research has not yielded any major progress in the prevention or curing of diseases, and in some cases has made things worse. Last year, scientists in Korea gave a woman, “Hwang Mi Soon,” a spinal injection of umbilical cord blood which, at first, allowed her to walk again despite her paralysis. Unfortunately, this only last a few weeks, and when the scientists attempted a second injection, an infection resulted, leaving her in pain. Embryonic stem cell research seems much more promising, and I would say that this would be a more effective focus.
