The debate over embryonic stem cell use could be reignited among government MPs and senators at a special party room meeting this week.

After a back bench revolt over Cabinet’s decision, Prime Minister John Howard promised a fresh party room debate on the issue. Mr Howard is considering allowing the meeting to go ahead within days.

The meeting would come amid simmering tensions over Cabinet’s decision to maintain existing laws.

The Lockhart review committee recommended the Government overturn its ban on therapeutic cloning. That was to allow scientists to harvest embryos for the purpose of producing stem cells.

Mr Howard said the stem cell issue was not an easy one to deal with and that he envied people who had strong clear views.
