The Catholic Church will fund a $100,000 grant for research on stem cells, further signalling its guarded support for some experimentation with some types of human cells.

The Archdiocese of Sydney, Australia, is offering support for research on stem cells obtained from adults, Cardinal George Pell has announced. He said research on adult cells had potential to lead to life-saving treatments.

Cardinal Pell said that research using adult stem cells - which can be obtained harming the donors - has shown very promising results in the treatment of diseases. Stem-cell research has been touted by scientists as a promising avenue toward cures for Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, and cystic fibrosis, among other disease.

I hope Bush is listening.
