Human-Bone-Marrow-Stem-Cells-Under-Scanning-Electron-MicroscopeAccording to the researchers of the Tissue Regeneration Department of University of Twente’s Institute for Biomechanical Technology (BMTI) and fellow scientists at UMC Utrecht and the Eramus Medical Center in Rotterdam, enzyme PKA when activated in the lab and implanted in the human stem cells, results in the formation of human bone.

The enzyme protein Kinase A (PKA) is an important enzyme which processes many activities in a cell. It is activated by a messenger called ‘cyclic AMP‘. Researchers think that, enzyme and stem cells stimulate each other.

Moreover they say that, not only the cyclic AMP promote maturation into bone cells, the cells themselves also secrete various substances that stimulate bone growth. This may be reason why Mesenchymal stem cells treated with cyclic AMP form significantly more bone than those without the stimulus.

The implantation of bone growth stimulating substance in advance have some advantages :-
* It can be removed just before implantation.
* Moreover it can be used in less concentrations as till date high concentrations of a bone growth stimulating hormone are used
* And, this hormone concentration resembles the cocktail of hormones normally involved in the bone growth.

Soon this promising method will be used to repair bone tissue using the patients own body cells. Then this will be grown quickly into tissue by using compact bioreactors and will be used in the operating theatre.
