Stem-cell startup Viacell’s experimental therapy procedure (tested so far on mice) is to take pancreatic tissue from cadaver and isolate the stem cells, which matures into islet cells.
They are then cloned into massive quantities of “islet stem cells [blog.taragana.com/index.php/category/biotech/stem-cell] ” which are then injected into the main artery to liver. These cells are believed to reside in the liver and possibly other organs and start producing insulin thereby curing diabetes [blog.taragana.com/index.php/category/health/diabetes] .
They are also looking to isolate stem cells from newborns umbilical cord blood thereby avoiding controversy by (stupid) stem cell research [blog.taragana.com/index.php/category/biotech/stem-cell] opponents.
Viacell is collaborating with Genzyme Corp. [www.genzyme.com] to develop a therapy for Type 1 diabetes ( juvenile diabetes), estimated to go into human trials within two years.

AIIMS To Give Proof of Stem Cell ResearchMarch 23rd, 2005 "Positron Emission Tomography is being installed at AIIMS next month, through which we will get the final proof of our work on heart patients. All the patients would be screened for finding how viable our work was and would also study various heart tissues of the patients metabolically," Dr P Venugopal, director AIIMS, said.
"We also plan to inject stem cells directly into the pancreatic arteries of patients suffering from diabetes," he says.
Stem cell research likely to help cure diabetesOctober 24th, 2008 Stem cell is the future in the world of medicine. Now the therapy is likely to be used for diabetes treatment.
Stem cells from eyelid fat may cure diabetesJune 5th, 2009 Korean scientists discovered that fat under the eyelids which was previously discarded after double eyelid surgery contains abundant amounts of neural stem cells, that may hold the ability to cure diabetes, the disease which has been identified as a slow killer. The research team lead by professor Kim Hae-kwon of Seoul Women's University, have able to manipulated this multipotent stem cells retrieved from human eyelid fat to specifically secrete insulin.
Stem Cells from Umbilical Cord Can Successfully Treat Type 1 DiabetesJune 30th, 2007 A new US study offers insights into the way stem cells from umbilical cord blood can be used to successfully treat diabetes. Researchers at the University of Florida College of Medicine studied twenty children aged between two and seven with type 1 diabetes, seven of whom were injected with cord blood cells.
Stem Cell Bill is the Only Hope for a 16 Years Old High School StudentJanuary 17th, 2007 Rep. Zack Space made an emotional appeal to colleagues on the House floor Thursday, imploring lawmakers to support legislation to lift federal funding limits on embryonic stem cell research, saying the bill is his son's "only meaningful hope for a cure."
Space's youngest son, Nicholas, was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes 10 years ago, when he was 6 years old. Since then, he has waged a battle against this devastating disease - undergoing thousands of injections and blood tests.
Stem Cells Can Replace the Cells in the Pancreas that Do Not Produce InsulinFebruary 3rd, 2007 Regardless of the emotional and religious issues surrounding stem cell therapy, scientists are confident stem cell research will lead the way to understanding and curing many of the diseases humans suffer from today. One disease which could benefit from such research is diabetes.
