It can now be announced that AIIMS has marked a global first in pioneering stem cell medicine by the “injection method”, placing the institute right at the top of the world’s medicine map.
This is very exciting news for diabetics and heart transplant patients.
As part of a path breaking study. conducted from February 2003 to January 2005, 35 cardiac patients have been given stem cell treatment and have been monitored at 6, 12 and 18 month intervals.
After six months, 56% of the affected (read dead muscles) area injected with these cells had shown improvement. After eighteen months, this went up to 64%.
With this the long queue of people awaiting a heart transplant can be cut down drastically.
Dr. Venugopal, the man behind this offers a interesting viewpoint:
“Sometimes when I have thought I would see an empty bed, I have seen a patient walk away from the institute on his own. This is important for me.”

@Vidya Sagar
I think you should contact AIIMS in Delhi. I don’t know about the pricing but it shouldn’t be much knowing that it is AIIMS. However getting the opportunity may be time consuming.
@Somit Arora
I am very sorry to hear about your condition. I will reaserch and post some articles on it soon. Do check this blog frequently.
Wish you best of luck.

My Mom is suffering from Diabetes from the past 20 years. She is 73 years old. Her leg is swollen with pus and is about to break. Can the stem cell injection revive the problem of hers?? If so, where to contact and what is pricing for the treatment?
March 22nd, 2005 at 9:20 pm
@K. Meharnath
I think you should immediately visit a nephrologist in your area for your Mother. Also check her urea & creatinine (the neprologist will tell you the same). I am not sure what you mean by swollen with pus. Swelling is normally due to fluid retention. Is she on any diuretic like Lasix?
The treatment mentioned here is conducted by Dr. Venugopal at AIIMS. Please check my comment above for phone numbers of AIIMS. I have no idea of the pricing but I can tell you the waiting list will be long.
You can also look at benfotiamine to reduce diabetic side-effects.
March 22nd, 2005 at 9:24 pm
@Aneesha Sorry for the late reply. I just missed it somehow. I think (not a doctor) stem cell treatment will definitely help him. However the question is where to get it.
Which country are you from? In India AFAIK only AIIMS is leading this research. In other countries you may have better options.

Dear sir,
Today I happened to go thru your website. I am a diabetic since last 15 years with high blood prtessure, and now my kidneys have been affected requiring dialysis. I would like to know whether stem cell therapy can be used to treat both the pancreas and kidneys. I am taking insulin for diabetes.
Please tell me whether the stem cell therapy is still at an experimental stage or is it an established and safe procedure. Does it require hospitalisation, and for how long?
Thanks and expecting an early response
S. C. Khare
March 29th, 2005 at 3:45 pm
@S.C. Khare
Theoretically yes. Yes it is still an experimental procedure.
Personally I cannot think of any reason why it would be unsafe. For the exact protocol and safety record you should contact AIIMS, details provided in my earlier comments.
@Tari Wish you best of luck. Please let me know how it goes.

my brothers son is a spastic, isthere any hope for spastics thro stem cell treatment, kindly reply.
April 1st, 2005 at 7:06 am
It is an active area of research.
Keep an eye on this blog. I will inform as and when I see something of interest on this topic.
Stem cell has the potential to provide cure for wide array of diseases. What is needed is support by governments in different countries, something which is unfortunately lacking in USA. India however is going forward with stem cell research and so are several other countries.

Dear Angsuman,
Hi. I, Hemant (age31) and my brother (prashant age29) from Nagpur are both suffering from Muscular dystrophy from last 12-15 years… I have already emailed & faxed my health history to AIIMS but I am yet to receive any reply. The AIIMS people (on customer service) are unable to provide even the basic information and are just asking patients to fax or email about the patient’s health condition…
I would like to know if the AIIMS currently providing treatment for Muscular Dystrophy ? or is it still in the clinical trial phase? In that case too I would like to participate/volunteer in such clinical trials/ treatment program so how should I approach them? (Dr. Venugopal mentioned to have successfully treated neurological disorders like muscular dystrophy (Ref. 26 feb TOI))
If you can please look into the matter and answer. Please help.
With high Hopes and Regards
Hemant

April 10th, 2005 at 5:52 pm
Dear Sir,
This is in response to the article in The Times of India dated 25-Feb-05, regarding stem cell injection.
Sir, my cousin sister 10 years is having symptoms of Muscular Dystrophy, though she is quite active ,she walks fine, goes to school, plays, she is quite intelligent too.But since her birth one of her calf was quite stiff & tight, she used to walk on her toes , she had difficulty in walking up the stairs.
We have done her CPK test ,the count is also quite high.Currently she is undergoing an Ayurvedic Treatment as Allopathic
could not offer any treatment. We have not done her biopsy as yet, so we don’t know which MD she is suffering from.
Sir, I want to know Is Muscular Dystrophy serious in Girls also as in boys? And can it be cured by injecting stem cells,as one 21- year old Muscular Dystrophy Patient has undergone a stem cell treatment under your supervision.
Sir ,we are desperately looking forward for an appointment with you, my Uncle Aunt are very depressed I wish an appointment with you can answer lot of our queries.
Sir I would be very glad if you could tell me what sort of food she should take, we are giving her protein rich diet, I want to know what all food contents can be added in her diet.
Looking forward for an positive response & appointment.
April 11th, 2005 at 5:43 am
Dear Hemant,
Sorry for the late response.
I think your best bet is to ask for Dr. Venugopal and speak to him directly. Pe polite but persistent till you get through to him. You are the best person to explain your medical condition to him.
Do you have any relatives /friends in Delhi? He/She may be able to track him better and get some one-on-one time with him.
Wish you good luck,
Angsuman

To all Muscular Dystrophy patients and their well wishers.
There is an interesting article on the gene therapy approach - Muscular dystrophy cure hope [www.irishhealth.com/?level=4&id=6153] .
DoctorYourself [www.doctoryourself.com/dystrophy.html] offers some nutritional advice on MD. Be sure to check with your doctor before commencing on any self-treatment plan however.
April 11th, 2005 at 6:03 am
Dear Priyanka,
I think you should contact Dr. Venugopal at AIIMS. AIIMS contact numbers are: 91-11-26588500, 91-11-26588700, 91-11-26589900
Request to directly speak to him. If he is not available ask when he will be available. Based on my past experience it shouldn’t be much problem.
Explain your situation in details to him.
Get the actual type diagnosed properly. It never pays to delay treatment of any disease, speaking from hard experience. For some type of MD treatment options are available like for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy corticosteriod (like wysolone) are offered as guideline for treatment [www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/01/050111115101.htm] .
I think you should always go for healthy well-balanced diet [www.muscular-dystrophy.org/information_resources/factsheets/daily_living_issues_factsheets/healthy_eating.html] .
Wish you good luck.

MY MOTHER IS 78 YRS OLD. SHE WAS DIAGONOSED WITH PULSE MISSING WITH THE RESULT PACE MAKER M/C MAKE ‘ELDER’ WAS IMPLANTED IN 1994. REGULAR CHECKS ARE BEING CARRIED OUT AT LARI HEART HOSPITAL AT LUCKNOW. THE LAST CHECK WAS CARRIED OUT IN OCTOBER 2004. PACEMAKER IS PERFORMING WELL AS PER DOCTORS/TECHNICIANS WHO COME FROM KOLKATA.
HOWEVER HER HEART CONDITION IS NOT THAT OK. THE WORKING IS AROUND 35%. SHE HAS GROWN WEAK AND IS TAKING MEDICINES REGULARLY AS PRESCRIBED. MY YOUNGER BROTHER WHO IS CMO IN CGHS TAKES CARE OF HER. PRESENTLY SHE IS HERE WITH ME AND LIKELY TO STAY FOR A FORTNIGHT.
HAVING READ DR VENUGOPAL’S RESEARCH ON STEM CELLS, I WOULD LIKE TO SEEK APPOINTMENT FROM DR. VENUGOPAL FOR MY MOTHER’S TREATMENT. POSSIBLY MY MOTHER REGAINS HER HEALTH SIMILAR TO THE 70 YR OLD MAN WHO WAS TREATED BY DR VENUGOPAL AND IMPROVED HIS HEALTH.

I have updated the article [blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive/aiims-pioneers-stem-cell-injection-for-reviving-heart-muscles] to answer some of the common questions about AIIMS including location, costs, general information etc.
I am unable to help you wrt. finding an accomodation in New Delhi because I have never gone to New Delhi, nor do I have active contacts in New Delhi.
For the rest of your questions you have to contact them directly.
BTW: I am not affiliated with AIIMS in any capacity.
Wish you and your son best of luck.

Hello,
My elder brother is having severe heart disfunctioning and we want to take him to AIMS. I heard from someone that Dr. Venugopal has his own website however, I’m unable to locate it. Can someone help me find it. Is there anyway we can get appointment to meet Dr. Venugopal. Any help in this regard would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

I too am not aware of his personal website. He is the director of AIIMS and a very busy man. Also recently he had a heart surgery which incidentally was done in the hand of junior most doctor in his team at AIIMS.
I think your best best will be to contact the cardiology department at AIIMS.
Here is an article on Dr. Venugopal [www.outlookindia.com/pti_news.asp?id=276452] which you may find interesting.
Wish you all best of luck.

Deepa,
Thanks for your kind wishes and your generous offer for help. I deeply appreciate your gesture.
You could, if you wish, write some articles in the Consanesco and/or Stem cell blog regarding the condition of SMA Type 2 patients. We need to create more awareness with people. I am also creating a forum where people who are suffering from various diseases can communicate with each other and support each other.
I hope and wish that you can avail the benefits of stem cell research to cure your condition.
I wish the very best of luck for you.
BTW: I am amazed ( and very happy) to see the huge amount of work you have done and the websites you have created.
Take care,

A diet packed with vitamins could help stop muscle wastage
SOMETHING as simple as eating a healthy diet could help people who suffer from a common genetic disorder, according to new research.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is the most common genetic cause of infant mortality worldwide, affecting about 1 in 6000 babies. It causes muscle weakness and wasting, and kills most victims before they are two years old. But many people survive to adulthood, despite the fact that most cases are caused by the same mutation in a single gene.
It had been assumed that the varying fates of those affected were due to other, as yet unknown, genes. But the new research suggests that one factor determining the severity of symptoms could be how much folic acid and vitamin B12 a patient consumes—either through a healthy diet or by taking vitamin pills.

My nephew is suffering from muscular dystrophy. We were told that there is no cure available. He had carried out some ayurvedic treatment where they do oil massage etc. But its just temporary relief.
Later i came to know of one ayurvedic doctor who is known to cure all sorts of incurable disease. We visited him and now he is under his treatment for the last one and a half months. His CPK value has since come down from 19000 to 11000 in 25 days and now to 2000 in the next 25 days.
We feel there is some improvement.
We hope for the best.
