Queensland Premier Anna Bligh, has opened a $18 million research facility at the Griffith University Nathan campus in Brisbane today. The research center will mainly work on diseases like cancer, spinal paralysis and Parkinson’s disease. Other than all these diseases, the center will work on other diseases like malaria, African Sleeping disorder among the others, reveal sources.

The San Diego Consortium for Regenerative Medicine has proposed to build a $115 million stem cell research facility in San Diego. The center will likely to contain 23,740-square-foot building housing laboratories and support space and is expected to be completed within 2010, confirmed sources. The facility would be located on more than 7 acres owned by the University of California at San Diego.

National Stem Cell has decided to make a mark in the cosmetics market in a different way. Decouverte Cosmetique,a subsidiary of the National Stem Cell is producing anti-aging products that incorporate tropelastin secreted from human embryonic stem cells. They claim that the product will enhance the natural formation of collagen and binds with existing protein chains in the skin to make it appear smoother and firmer.

The Food and Drug Administration (USA) has decided to go for a two day hearing with the biotech companies over the issue to approve clinical trials for the first generation of stem cell derived drugs. The biotech industry wants FDA guidelines for the complex approval process and very much expects its opinion to be free from political influence.

Treating infertile couples by making artificial sperm and eggs from other cells will be possible within 5 to 15 years, according to an international group of scientists and policy makers. The technology could also potentially allow gay, lesbian couples as well as post-menopausal women to have children and it is ethical.
