Japanese health ministry team has developed technology to safely and effectively reproduce stem cells from umbilical cord blood.
The technology may increase the success rate of stem cell transplantation, which is used to treat serious diseases such as leukemia, ministry officials said. Clinical tests using the new technique are already planned for leukemia patients.
Note: Cord blood contains stem cells that can be used in transplants for as many as 80 serious medical problems. It includes the most prevalent types of leukemia, metabolic disorders such as Tay-Sachs disease, blood-related conditions such as sickle cell anemia and severe anemia problems.

Research team led by Yann Barrandon at the EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne) and the CHUV (Lausanne University Hospital) has discovered, using animal model, that certain cells (clonogenic keratinocytes) inside hair follicles are true multipotent stem cells, capable of developing into the many different cell types needed for hair growth and follicle replacement.

The world’s largest umbilical cord blood bank is to be set up in Mumbai, India through a $20 million investment from the South Korean biotech company, Histostem.
It aims to provide stem cells for transplant surgeons globally.

The Catholic Church in South Korea has decided to donate millions of dollars for adult stem cell research. The move comes amid strong Vatican opposition to embryonic stem cell research and is reflects support for research into an alternative.

Researchers in Philippines claims they are close to creating world’s first clone of a water buffalo. They could eventually raise the productivity levels for millions of farmers.
“The aim is to replicate a super buffalo that would boost the genetic make-up and milk production of the native water buffalo, the carabao,” said Dr Libertado Cruz, executive director of the government-run Philippine Carabao Center.
